According to the Xinmin Evening News, reported on August 6, 2013, a research team led by Yuko Yuko of Japan Institute of Agricultural Biological Resources recently developed a drought-tolerant rice genetically modified to penetrate deep into the soil In the absorption of moisture, so under drought conditions can grow. It is reported that the researchers developed a drought-tolerant rice by crossing a gene called DRO1 owned by Upland rice. After DRO1 gene senses gravity, it can promote the downward extension of upland of upland rice. Planting experiments showed that drought tolerant rice with DRO1 gene was able to harvest about 30% of its normal level under the severe drought conditions where IR64 rice was almost completely harvested.
