John J. Morrison, Ph.D., of Galway University Hospital in Ireland, told Reuters Health that pregnant women are at increased risk of fetal unilateral fissures during their pregnancy and early pregnancy. This result scientifically confirms previous speculation; epidemiological findings show a significant increase in the rate of recent septicemia, especially for young mothers who do not receive social support. Dr. Morrison and colleagues analyzed possible linkages between the use of recreational drugs and the risk of fetal ascites by analyzing their mothers hair; the findings have been published recently in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (BJOG, an international Obstetrics and Gynecology magazine) published. Among 22 women diagnosed with fetal ascites, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) showed that 10 (45%) patients had been over-recreational during or around the first trimester of pregnancy
