广义的五四精神包括爱国精神、民主精神、科学精神、创造精神和奋斗精神，其中，创造是五四精神的灵魂。创造是人类文明进步的动力，而需要则是推动创造的原动力，人类的一切创造均为满足自身不断增长的物质和精神需要；创造是对原有东西的否定，所以，要创造就要打破精神枷锁，解放思想，提倡冒险精神和开拓进取精神；创造是对原有东西的辩证否定，所以，创造是在学习和借鉴全人类的文明成果基础上的创新，是对中国传统文化的批判继承。今天，我们重视创造，就要为创造提供可靠的制度保证，建立激励创造的机制
