在北京，每当见到穿着一身蓝衣的南方姑娘挑着悠悠的茶叶担子走街串巷卖茶叶时，心中便不由得响起熟悉的湖南民歌旋律；“桑木扁担轻又轻，我挑担茶叶上北京……” 一个偶然的机会，见到了前湖南音协主席白诚仁老先生，才知道他就是这首著名的湖南民歌的曲作者。白老先生一生创作过许多人们耳熟能详的旋律，特别是他曾用心编织的《小背篓》，让当年名不见经传的宋祖英脱颖而出，红遍歌坛。 虽已古稀，但白老先生依旧精神矍铄。谈起音乐创作，谈起弘扬民族音乐文化来，他的脸上飞扬着神采、兴致所至，他会一边哼唱，一边挥手打着拍子。当唱起他创作的歌曲《师说》的片段时，他感情竟难以自持，唏嘘着掩面流泪……从中不难看出，这位著名作曲家率真质朴的天性和丰富浓烈的感情。
