In 1906, a young Polish Jew came to Palestine. Following the pilgrimage to the long-cherished Jerusalem, he diverted to the Negev area. The piece of “unknown land” greets the young man with a harsh appearance: under the scorching sun, the gardened desert reaches out to the distant mountains, sparse trees and yellowish shrubs Swaying in the dry hot air. Scattered by the earth, bare rocks, strange potholes, and alarmed lizards, scorpions glared at the uninvited guest who dared to break into their comfort zone. Faced with this deserted desert region, the young man secretly vowed: Make sure to make the desert beautiful flowers.
