[Tokyo, Japan, August 10, 1981] A centenarian in Japan said you want to live a hundred years old? Stop smoking and drinking, eat raw fish, and live in a quiet neighborhood. A survey conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare on more than 1,000 Japanese over the age of 100 found that only 18.8% of men and 6.8% of women smoked, compared with 74.7% of men and 16.2% of women smokers compared to all Japanese adults. Only 26.5% of men and 18.4% of longevity people consumed alcohol regularly, compared with 90% and 45% of the average adult, respectively. The oldest 115-year-old man said they like to eat raw fish and their diet contains a lot of protein and fresh vegetables. The total number of residents living in rural areas accounted for 35.8%, living in quiet urban residential areas accounted for 21.4%, built in rural communities living 10.2%. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare issued 1,018 questionnaires and received 1,009 replies, of which 828 or 82.1% of the respondents were women.
