我国民间木版年画历史悠久、产地众多、传播广泛,全国有23个省市有数量不等、规模不同的年画生产地。如果说杨柳青、桃花坞、潍县和绵竹四大年画是中国年画产地中的第一集团,那么湖南滩头年画凭借清末明初鼎盛时期全国排名第三的销售量,以及20世纪80年代以来民间艺人在保护和恢复年画生产上的不懈努力,可以和历史最悠久的河南朱仙镇年画、单地销售量最高的河北武强年画等列为第二集团。此外,重庆的梁平、四川的夹江、广东的佛山、陕西的凤翔、山西的新绛等地也都有自己本土的木版年画产地。
