According to a survey conducted by the University of Otago, New Zealand, about two-thirds (65%) of New Zealanders inhaled more salt than currently recommended intakes and processed foods were the culprit. During the course of the investigation, the researchers analyzed urine samples from 3,000 recent adults’ nutrition surveys in the New Zealand government. They found that the average daily sodium intake in New Zealanders surveyed was 3.5g (equivalent to 9g of salt a day), while the recommended intake limit was 2.3g per day. Although adult nutrition surveys have found that salt is associated with over-consumption of sodium after food is cooked, sodium intake is exceeded even when no salt is added after cooking.
