Objective To understand the death of residents in Yunlong District of Xuzhou City in 2012 and provide a scientific basis for making prevention and control measures. Methods According to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), the data of death causes of residents in Yunlong district in 2012 were classified. The data of Death Reg 2005 and SPSS13.0 were analyzed. Results The crude death rate was 598.94 / 100 000 in 2012 in Yunlong District of Xuzhou City. The standardized death rate was 400.05 / 100000. The ratio of male to female was 1.19:1. The male was higher than the female with significant difference (χ2 = 14.850 , P <0.01). The mortality rate was higher in the 0 ~ group than in the group 1 ~ 5, and the mortality rate was the lowest in the age group of 1 ~ 5 years. The mortality increased with the increase of age, especially after 55 years of age. The number of deaths ≥55 years accounted for 86.01% of the total deaths. The top five causes of death were cerebrovascular disease, heart disease, malignant tumor, respiratory disease, injury and poisoning. Malignancy, injuries and poisoning are the most important potential sources of longevity. The potential years of life lost are 2,389.50 person-years and 2,150.00 person-years, respectively, with an average life expectancy of 7.01 and 19.03 years. Conclusion Chronic diseases and injuries are the main causes of death among residents in Yunlong District, Xuzhou City. We need to step up efforts in health education and behavioral interventions to further reduce the incidence of chronic diseases and injuries, thereby reducing the mortality rate of residents in our district.
