高锰钢难于切削的主要原因是其组织为单一均匀的奥氏体组织,在切削过程中受塑性变形的影响,奥氏体为面心立方点阵,塑性变形时滑移面数目较体心立方点阵的铁素体多,因而产生严重的加工硬化。且导热性差(导热系数λ为0.031cal/cm·s·c°),切削温度高。另外,高锰钢的冲击韧性值高(约为45钢的8倍),延伸率较大,因此切屑强韧,断屑困难。
