1929年6月6日至10月20日举办的西湖国际博览会,开了中国展会业的先河。穿越71年时空,踏进21世纪,浙江省杭州市决定发挥杭州作为中国会展业发祥地的优势,于2000年恢复举办西湖博览会,为新世纪拓展商务旅游、发展会展经济、传播先进文化奠定新的基础。西博会项目的安排上围绕“住在杭州”、“游在杭州”、“学在杭州”、“创业在杭州”的城市品牌和全球化、新经济的要求,求专求精,形成品牌系列。以展览、会议、活动三大板块的项目互为补充、互相渗透、有机结合。体现“住在杭州”的项目有人居展、家具展、布艺展和中国物业管理论坛,体现“游在杭州”的项目有西湖国际烟花大会、西湖狂欢节、中国天目山森林旅游资源博览会、旅游交易会、旅游区域合作研讨会、国际旅游(休闲)商品博览会、中国(杭州)美食节、国际民间
