0 Introduction Coal tar pitch contains a considerable amount of nitrogen, oxygen-containing compounds. Oxides tend to interfere with mesophase growth during carbonization. Nitrogen compounds tend to stay in the product coke, leading to serious burst in the graphitization process. Removing them from raw materials is one way to solve these problems.
