We fill the optical fiber with mineral-based or silicon-based fumed silica dispersions to prevent fiber bending and provide environmental protection. Proper control of the rheological properties of this packing material is of crucial importance for improving its performance. The viscosity of such a filler must be very high enough to minimize the stress applied to the optical fiber; however, its elasticity is so good that it does not drop over time or as the temperature changes. We studied the effects of shear rate, aging, temperature and water contamination on the rheological properties of two commercially available mixtures using steady-state and dynamic measurements. Through the aggregation of submicron particles and their interaction with different solvents The resulting microstructure explains our findings.
