1.Analysis of the students
Our students have the following issues to be resolved.
(1)The students’ interest in learning English is not very strong, some students even have a sense of disgust;
(2)Most students in our secondary vocational school do not have proper learning methods;
(3)The lack of purpose that seems to be taking over the lives of many secondary vocational school students, resulting in poor learning habits.
2.My understanding of this lesson
This lesson is a dialogue. Both Text A and Text B relate to sports and exercise. In this period, I choose the dialogue learning as the learning focus. Studying Text A our students can improve their communication ability, learn some new words about sports and exercise in our daily life.
3.My teaching aims
Knowledge aim: understand the main idea of the dialogue.
Ability aim: retell the dialogue in their own words.
Emotional aim: Make the Ss love life and do something to make our school life more colorful and keep healthy.
Important and difficult points:
The words to describe one’s likes and dislikes. Improve one’s reading skills.
Retell the dialogue in one’s own words.
4.Teaching steps
I have designed the following six steps to train their ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing, especially ability.
4.1 Step One (warming up)
Play the song” you and me” sung by Sarah Brightman and Liu Huan to create an atmosphere. Sign the students to be quiet, then start a free talk with the students. Use computer to show some pictures of different sports, such as ball games, events of sports-track and field, sport stars as following on the screen:
Basket ball(籃球) rugby(橄榄球) football(足球) volleyball(排球) tennis(网球) baseball(垒球) handball(手球) hockey(曲棍球) golf(高尔夫球) cricket(板球) ice hockey(冰球)
Present some other sports on the screen:
gymnastics(体操) horizontal bar(单杠) parallel bars(双杠) rings(吊环) trapeze(秋千) side horse(鞍马) weight-lifting(举重) boxing(拳击) judo(柔道) winter sports(冬季运动) skiing(滑雪) ice skating(溜冰) figure skating(花样滑冰)
Ask some questions as following:
(1)Do you like sports? Which do you like better, basketball or football?
(2)Do you have any other hobbies? What is it or what are they?
(3)Do you know Olympic Games? What is the Olympic spirit?
(4)Have you ever heard of the old English saying “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy?” What do you think of the saying?
These questions are employed to warm up the students and raise the interests of the students to speak English in class on the topics they like and familiar with. 4.2 Step Two (Dialogue Presentation)
Brief introduce English Corner: An English Corner uses the corner of a restaurant room or a hotel lobby, where people can meet regularly to practice their spoken-English skills.
(First listening) After the teacher’s brief introduction to the dialogue about English Corner’ ask the students to listen to the tape of the dialogue with their books closed. After listening to the dialogue, ask the students to answer some simple questions focusing on the general idea of the dialogue.
This step is employed to make the students get the general idea of the dialogue as a whole one. At the same time let the students have a chance to practice their listening ability.
4.3 Step Three (Dialogue Reading)
(Second reading) This time ask the students to read the dialogue carefully. After reading, ask the students some questions focusing on the details of the dialogue.
Show the questions and answers.
This step is employed to make the students have a further understanding of the dialogue.
Language Points
Deal with some language points raised by the students and ask the students to find out the words expressing ones likes and dislikes, then present them, ask the Ss to make as many sentences as they can to practice how to express one’s likes and dislikes.
Like-dislike love-hate enjoying doing sth. be fond of be interested in go in for feeling like doing sth
Show the students: when we talk about out hobbies, we often use words below: always/all the time/usually/often/sometimes/occasionally/every/now and then/seldom/rarely/hardly/ever/never
Give some examples and then ask the students to make as many sentences as they can to practice.
4.4 Step Four (Dialogue Drill)
In this step the students are required to practice the dialogue in pairs by reading the dialogue aloud. Let the students find out the expressions and sentence patterns for making suggestions and replying in this dialogue.
4.5 Step Five (Consolidation)
This step gives the students a few minutes to make a similar dialogue using the phrases and sentence patterns learned in this dialogue according to the given situation. Show it. The teacher gives some advice on making such dialogues.
4.6 Step Six (Homework)
Ask the students to write a short dialogue about talking about hobbies. This is used to practice writing ability. Write a letter to their teacher, telling the teacher something about their hobby. Try to find out the useful information about the Olympic Games after class.
5.Teaching methods
Use recorder or computer to create an atmosphere.
Pair work, then group work.
My lesson plan is designed on the basis of these two principles. The questions in my teaching plan are raised for the purpose of arousing the students’ interests and aimed to help the students to concentrate on the meaning of the dialogue. As for the language points, they are presented and practiced related to students’ life as much as possible. This way of teaching language points is employed in the hope that students will find them easier to understand and retain, and that they can use some of them immediately in their everyday life.
6.Blackboard design Ending
That’s all. Thanks for your attention.
