This article describes the theoretical basis for conducting a research project on the validity of reading in foreign language acquisition and how to implement it. This article focuses on two issues: the initial stages of the project (inspired by similar research projects conducted by Elley and Mangubhai in 1983), and the background questions of the students involved. In the very early stages of the project, a class library was provided to students in all 15 schools in Hamburg and tests were conducted in the “Reading” and “Non-Reading” groups.
