封建王朝的皇帝死后一般都有陵墓,唯独元朝皇帝没有留下一座陵墓。这是一个千古之谜。明朝叶子奇《草木子》中记载:元朝皇帝驾崩,“用啰木两片,凿空其中,类人形大小合为棺,置遗体其中……加髹漆,毕,则以黄金为圈,三圈定(箍两头、中间)”。然后,掘深沟一道埋葬,“以万马蹂之使平。杀骆驼于其上,以千骑守之。来岁草既生,则移帐散去,弥望平衍,人莫知也”。
