地铁信号不仅是保证行车安全、提高运输效率的重要设备,而且是指挥行车、实现地铁自动控制与远程控制的重要手段。由于地铁站间距离短、行车速度高、行车密度大、运送对象都是乘客的特点,因此对信号设备的安全可靠性提出了更高的要求。地铁信号采用三显示透镜色灯信号机,设于列车运行方向的右侧。按用途又分进站、出站、通过,调车等信号机。为防止列车发生尾追事故,确保行车安全,地下铁自动闭塞通过信号机采用三显示代防护区段的信号显示制度。即对每一个被占用的闭塞分区除了以色灯信号机的红色灯光加以防护外,再增加一个闭塞分区称防护区段,也以红灯加以防护,如图所示。这样隧道内所有复线区段均采用复线自动闭塞。正线至车辆段的联络线采用单线自动闭塞。由于地铁有电流干扰、行车速度高、闭塞分区短以及为适应列车运行自动化的要求,1965年开始设计、研制了移频自动闭塞设备,于1969年10月在北京地铁一线北京站至苹果园站间安装运行。
