This paper investigates academic staffs lived experience of research and their perception of the relationship between research and teaching in a new English university.A critical qualitative approach was employed in this research, through a method of open-ended,spontaneous and conversational interviews with twenty academic staffs across five departments within three faculties in the University.The study reveals that the views on what research means are various,and are dependent upon how academic scholarship is conceptualized at a personal level.The boundaries between teaching,research and professional learning may be considered as fluid in academic staffs daily lives.Individual understanding of “ research” results from their lived experience;it is not imposed on them by any dominant discourse. It calls for the institution to provide a space for debate,negotiation or co-construction of academic identities—to promote an environment conducive to individual academic staffs engagement with research and research informed teaching.
