In 1979, there were 209 cases of collective food poisoning in England and Wales, 325 cases of domestic food poisoning and a total of 7,413 cases of sporadic cases. A total of 11,881 cases of Salmonella and other bacterial food poisoning occurred, of whom 9,912 were Salmonella-infected and 37 died. In addition, 1,607 cases of Clostridium perfringens food poisoning, 328 cases of Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning and 22 cases of Bacillus cereus food poisoning were also reported. Salmonella was isolated from 37 of the 37 patients who died of food poisoning, 16 of them from the blood and 21 from saliva.
