Social Cultural Factors’ influence on Children First Language Learning

  【Abstract】Views concerning language acquisition are various. Children’s language acquisition process is a process in which children subconsciously grasp language and learn culture in a social and cultural environment. Children have innate ability to acquire language, but the influence of acquired linguistic environment factors is more important. This paper tries to make a deep analysis of the social influential factors of children’s language acquisition.

  I. The Families’ Influence on Children FLA
  The family is the earliest social environment for children. In the family environment, the educational level, values and language level of the family members inevitably have an important impact on children’s language acquisition. Parents, as the main guardians and caregivers of children, are the most direct people who provide the language environment for children. The interaction with children also influences the children’s language habits at all times. Generally speaking, the higher the degree of parents’ education, the more conducive to the development of children’s language acquisition. Because highly educated parents pay more attention to children’s language thinking and language cognitive ability, when they communicate with children, they pay more attention to the standardization and politeness of language. Some research shows that there is a big difference in language acquisition between rural children’s language development and city children’s language development, which is mainly caused by the level of education environment.
  II. The Regional Culture Factors
  Regional culture consists of climate, diet, culture and other customs, different regional culture also has a certain impact on children’s language acquisition. Climate differs in South and North China, the climate in former is humid while the latter is dry, so that people in south China prefer to eat spicy food. Although there are also some people love to eat spicy, but the southern children may grasp of the concept of “spicy” children earlier than the north.
  III. Language is a Symbol of Culture
  Language is a symbol of culture, different people will choose the language of different symbols to record their own culture. Language of different symbols containing different linguistic units, combination, different polymerization methods and so on, reflects the difficulty degree of cultural content and accumulation in different language acquisition, which will affect children the speed of language acquisition.   For example, children in the United States learn English, and Chinese children learn Chinese, which reflects the use of different language symbols in different ethnic languages. The same nationality children can learn more than two languages, such as Chinese children growing up in the United States may acquire both English and Chinese. Different degrees of difficulty in language phenomenon of the same language or dialect, also affect children’s language acquisition speed. The language itself is a creation of human culture, and it’s closely related with social culture and directly or indirectly influenced by the culture, in a sense, children’s language learning process is learning culture.
  Conclusion
  The children’s language acquisition is influenced not only by innate factors, but also by acquired cultural factors. Different language concepts, character roles and cultural environment make children show great differences in language acquisition and form different characteristics of language acquisition. The studies on language acquisition do not only have theoretical significance but also have directive functions to linguistic application research especially language teaching and learning. It would be the biggest progress in the history of foreign language teaching and learning if we can fix an effective mode to stimulate the learner’s innate language knowledge to develop and improve as their native language acquisition.
