Aims /purpose.To evaluate the effic acy of occlusion ther-apy initiated after 9years of age.Me thods.A total of 16amblyopes of 9years or older(range,9.0-14.5years;mean,10.5years)-with a difference in visual acuity o f over two lines between the eyes alter4weeks of first full-time spectacle wear were inclu ded.None of the chil-dren had undergone a previous ocular examination, had ever worn spectacles, received occlusion therapy,or had strabismus surgery.Initial worst visual acuity after 4weeks of full-time spectacle wear was 20/100in three patients, between 20/80and 20/40in 11patient s,and 20/30in two patients.Full-time occlusion w as performed in 14pa-tients and part-time occlusion in tw o patients.Results.The final visual acuity of 15out of 16patients(94%)improved at least two lines. The final visual a cuities ranged from20/30to 20/20in 14patients,20/40i n one patient,and20/50in one remaining patient who began amblyopia therapy at 14.5years of age, with the poorest compliance among the patients.Conclusions.Oc clusion therapy for anisometropic and strabismic ambly opia can be successful even if initiated after the age of 9ye ars.
