Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center recently stated that they have discovered a new gene in lung and colon cancer tumors and have initially identified it as being associated with cancer. When this gene is defective, excess phosphate accumulates on proteins that control cell growth, and the protein cannot perform its normal function, leaving the cell growth out of control and becoming a tumor. According to the research project leader, Glen Evans, the gene was found on the eleventh chromosome of human cells where cancer genes “grew together”. Genes that cause uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, and several other cancers are considered to be in this area, but they have not been confirmed.
