Although many of the central ideas in development economics merely repeat the arguments of Smith and Marx, great economists of the 18th and 19th centuries, they remain a new branch of economics. In the 40 years after the war, the economics of development produced a great deal of literature, much like octopus’s tentacles, penetrating into other well-established branches of the economic literature, such as labor economics, monetary economics and welfare economics. These documents are characterized by a great deal of meaningful material in the form of oiled and official documents; controversy among many of the main representatives who hold different points of view; and some play a role in the development process International agencies have provided a wealth of literature, in particular the various United Nations agencies involved in economic matters such as the UNCTAD, the International Labor Organization (ILO), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization
