6月14日,美国航宇局为了使哈勃空间望远镜的聚焦达到最佳状态,指令调整望远镜的副镜,可是不管怎样调整,也无法使聚焦调到最佳。随后,马歇尔中心和戈达德中心的技术人员花了两个星期的时间,全面检测哈勃望远镜的聚焦功能,发现主镜和副镜中,可能有一个镜片存在着球面像差的质量问题。按设计要求,哈勃望远镜的主镜和副镜须把入射的目标光线的70%聚焦在0.2弧秒范围内。而现在只能把10%~25%的光线聚焦在这个范围内,其余光线分散在1.5弧秒范围内。这样,望远镜的分辨率并不比地基望远镜高多少。
On June 14, NASA ordered the pair of telescope mirrors to optimize the focus of the Hubble Space Telescope. However, no matter how the adjustments were made, the focus could not be optimized. Subsequently, the technicians at the Marshall Center and Goddard Center spent two weeks thoroughly examining the Hubble’s focusing function and found that one of the primary and secondary mirrors might have a spherical aberration quality problem. According to the design requirements, the main mirror and secondary mirror of the Hubble telescope should focus 70% of the incident target light within the range of 0.2 arc second. And now only 10% ~ 25% of the light focus on this range, the rest of the light scattered in 1.5 arc seconds range. In this way, the telescope resolution is not much higher than the ground telescope.
