In the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, dopamine (DA) is the major inhibitory factor of prolactin (PRL) secretion. DA from the hypothalamus released by the pituitary portal vein into the anterior pituitary, inhibit the secretion of PRL. It is both neurotransmitter and hormone, with a dual role. As a pituitary hormone, PRL is associated with many reproductive and non-reproductive processes and is an important hormone that induces and maintains lactation.
