Many multinational car companies tend to work directly with managing low-cost Chinese component companies, and OEMs can even provide technology to them. Since 1993, China’s policy has allowed foreign manufacturers to hold a majority stake in Chinese parts companies, Overseas suppliers have been reluctant to bring the latest technology to China. At the same time, local parts makers lack the capabilities to develop the new accessories, modules and systems needed for modern cars. Imports of spare parts in 2004 surged to $ 11.3 billion in 2004 from $ 3.4 billion in 2002 due to the inability of the industry to manufacture the precision parts needed for the latest generation of vehicles.
