五代两宋期间,中国建立了制度明确的画院,尤其是宋代绘画在中国古代美术史上具有极其辉煌灿烂的成就,而宋代画院则是中国古代美术教育史上最为完备的,规模最大的艺术教育机构,画院画家在从事绘画以及绘画教学中,重传承、重写生的特点,具有突出的时代性,很多著名的大画家李唐、马远、夏圭、张择端等都出自宋代画院。
