什么是金文?金文是指殷商时期铸刻在青铜器上的文字。古时称铜为金,因而把刻在青铜器上的文字称为金文。因为这种文字在钟和鼎上出现最多,故又称之为钟鼎文。著名的毛公鼎,共有铭文499字,是现存最长的青铜器铭文。钟鼎铭文,字凹入的阴文叫做款;字凸出的阳文叫做识。钟鼎铭文一般记录当时人们纪典、田猎、征伐等活动的情况以及制造原因等,这些文字属于大篆。散氏盘内的铭文就记录了当时两个国家关于土地的契约。
