自近代王国维先生“一代有一代之文学”的论断流行以来,世人文学研究的兴趣多集中于先生所明示的“楚辞”、“汉赋”、“唐诗”、“宋词”、“元曲”上。一种文艺品类确乎可能在某一时代称盛一时,到达其艺术的最高水准,从而为后世所难以企及。但此种文艺品类,常常并非随着时代的终结,便迅即退出历史的舞台,故若想查考此种文艺的盛衰兴废之由,则不能不瞻前而顾后。以王静安先生所激赏的“元曲”而论,杂剧固然大兴于金元,元亡以后杂剧却并未随之同归于尽,明清两代均有其后继者,戏剧史若对此阙而不论,则不成
