Controllable source seismology (CSS) is the main source of information on the fine structure of rock layers. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the wide-angle reflection / refraction method, giving an overview of this method, which is commonly used to derive Earth models from controllable source seismological data. Focusing on full-wavefield-based methods, such as full waveform inversion, illustrates some of the future prospects for controllable source seismology, not only achieving high objectivity in the simulation but also dramatically improving spatial resolution. It should be emphasized that researchers should be aware of the limitations of using realistic parameters to model actual rock properties. In order to get a comprehensive geologic explanation of these models, simple multi-parameter earth models based on seismic data or constrained by other geophysical fields should be encouraged beyond simple P-wave simulations.
