In this era of antibiotic and temporal bone microsurgery, severe otitis media complications have been rare, but some cases may still occur. Chronic inflammation of the middle ear can reach many parts of the temporal bone through blood vessels, fascia layers, or processes that are replaced by granulation tissue due to bone resorption induced by osteitis.
