“四神”亦称“四灵”、“四象”、“四宫”、“四兽”等。随着时光流逝,它的寓意也不断发生变化,汉代及其以后四神体系成立,使其变成了拱卫天帝的四大方阵,青龙、白虎、朱雀和玄武已分别代表东西南北四方星宿的名称。四神的确立不仅使古人观察星空时分出了东西南北,也使四神以地域方位的思维理念融入到中国传统的文化系统中。从艺术造型上分析,四神表现出的力量、运动、神韵以及由此构成的气势美,带给观者强烈的艺术感染力。
