阅读是主动的、积极地获取信息的创造行为,是培养学生通过视觉感知书面文字符号并获取信息能力的途径,更是提高听、说、写能力的有力杠杆。它在英语学习中起着重要的作用,是中学生学习英语过程中的一项重要活动。《全日制中学英语教学大纲》指出“中学英语教学的目的是巩固,扩大学生的基础知识,发展听、说、读、写的基本技能,侧重培养阅读能力”。阅读速度是衡量阅读能力的重要标志。加大阅读量,提高阅读速度已成为当今英语教学的一个主要趋势和特点。因此必须课内和课外阅读相结合,更新教学观念,调整对策,改进教法,培养阅读技巧、方法,阅读速度的提高能扩大阅读的输入量,扩大知识面,促进学生的阅读能力和英语应用能力。没有一定的阅读速度就不能顺利地输入信息,更谈不上运用英语。影响英语阅读速度的因素很多,但大体可分:
