Objective To investigate the level of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in gingival crevicular fluid and serum of patients with periodontitis (PDT) and its clinical significance. Methods Totally 82 PDT patients diagnosed and treated in our hospital from January 2012 to June 2014 were selected as the PDT group and 10 healthy people in the physical examination center were selected as the healthy group in the same period. The gingival crevicular fluid was used to measure the GPX, The levels of GPX in serum were measured by colorimetric method. The levels of GPX in gingival crevicular fluid and serum of all subjects were statistically analyzed. The gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD) and attachment loss (AL) before and after treatment in PDT group were measured by Pearson Analysis of GPX levels and GI, PD, AL correlation. Results The levels of GPX in gingival crevicular fluid and serum of patients with PDT were significantly lower than those of healthy controls (P <0.05). After treatment, the levels of GI, PD and AL in PDT patients were lower than those before treatment, in gingival crevicular fluid and serum (P <0.05). The results of Pearson analysis showed that the GPX level in gingival crevicular fluid was not related to GI (r = 0.178, P> 0.05), but negatively correlated with PD and AL (r = -4.136, P <0.05; r = -5.468, P <0.05). Conclusions GPX levels in gingival crevicular fluid and serum can effectively reflect the antioxidant capacity of patients with PDT and can be used as an important reference index of periodontal tissue status and worth further promotion in clinical practice.
