詹姆逊把柏克和康德的美学观结合起来,给出一种“忸怩作态的崇高”或者是“歇斯底里的崇高”的新概念。主要是描述对于后现代文化的新的文化体验,是一种欣狂喜悦感更是情感的强度的表现。其具体表现形态是:摹拟体的出现、科技的崇高、后现代建筑空间等。展现了其崇高的独特文化体验和感受。但是其中由崇高问题隐约突显出詹姆逊在现代主义与后现代主义两者间徘徊的矛盾性以及对崇高认识理论的不完满。
