在空间理论的视野下,空间不光是静止不变的地点,同时也弥漫着社会关系和情感,空间变化不仅为物理性的,往往也会引发人们情感的转变。作为纽约市地标,自19世纪到20世纪初,百老汇经历了四次较为标志性的变化,因此在文学中的形象也随之改变。从惠特曼、德莱塞再到欧·亨利和帕索斯,他们笔下的主人公对于百老汇的空间变化有着不同反应,一方面反映出百老汇由简到奢对人们生活以及情感的影响,同时也揭示了作家从赞扬到批判的态度走向,进一步体现空间对人类情感和文学创作的重要作用。
From the perspective of spatial theory, space is not only a static place, but also filled with social relations and emotions. Spatial changes are not only physical but also often lead to changes in people’s emotions. As a landmark of New York City, Broadway has undergone four landmark changes since the 19th and early 20th centuries, so the image in literature also changes. From Whitman, Dreiser to Ouen Henry and Passos, the protagonists in their works respond differently to the changes in space on Broadway. On the one hand, it reflects the influence of Broadway on people’s life and emotion, The author’s attitude toward complimenting from criticism to criticism further demonstrates the important role space plays in human emotions and literary creation.
