According to reports, the second largest bank in France, Lyon Credit Bank, lost 12 billion francs (about 2.4 billion U.S. dollars) in 1994. It also found that it involved a deficit of about 50 billion francs (about 10 billion U.S. dollars). Facts show that Lyon has a serious credit crisis. The loss is mainly due to a large investment in real estate. Since the end of 1990, the French economy has been at a low ebb, corporate profits have plummeted, and operating conditions have generally been poor. Under such circumstances, the French government lowered the benchmark interest rate and encouraged institutions and individuals to invest in industry and real estate so as to stimulate the economic recovery and reduce the unemployment rate. As a result, Credit Suisse heavily invested in real estate, with only SDB and ALTUS finance companies running loans worth 42 billion francs (about $ 8 billion) in real estate. With the further recession of the French economy, real estate prices plummeting, real estate companies have gone bankrupt, Credit Suisse has plunged into huge losses, there has been a serious credit crisis. Although the French government said it would like to give it protection, it would be hard to make a turn for the moment because of its huge loss and heavy burden.
