The specific interaction of certain polar organic solvents with olefins and aromatics is the basis for these polar solvents to separate alkenes and aromatics from alkanes. The selectivity of this separation depends on this particular interaction. L. J. Andrews believes that nitriles and ketones can form charge-transfer complexes with methyl or benzene derivatives such as benzene and tetracyanoethylene. R. F. Weimer and J.M. Prausnitz UV spectrophotometric determination of p-xylene with propionitrile, acetone, N-methylpyrrolidone and other molecular complexation constants. We also determined the molecular complexation constant of some aromatics with N-methylpyrrolidone by spectrophotometry.
