This paper will first review the context of the use of the Internet in foreign language programmes in terms of technology, theory, policy and investment. Then, potentials of the Internet for creating new learning environments in the English listening class will be discussed. Following this, a case of unsatisfactory use of the Internet in the English listening class will be analysed, in the hope of critically evaluating the role of the Internet in language programmes.
