Modern China is a period of rapid development of the country and the gradual progress of Western learning. During this period, qualitative changes took place in China’s literary criticism in terms of concepts, methods and modes. There are two main criticisms that mark the transformation: one is Wang Guowei’s (1877-1927) Criticisms of A Dream of Red Mansions, and the other is Luo Yu (1881-1936). Through these two essays, one can see how the two critics absorbed and used Western learning into their own literary criticism practice in the initial stage of China’s modernization. This may be a solution to how contemporary literary criticism should absorb and apply Western learning. Inspired
