A large number of laboratory tests show that fillet weld bead shot peening can significantly improve the fatigue performance of fillet welds in aluminum alloys. This effect is even more pronounced if shot peening is performed after applying some preload. Eight-year field trials of aluminum welded trucks running on Queensland and the South Wales railway confirmed the beneficial effects of shot peening. Another way to improve fatigue performance by trimming the weld with TIG (GTA) welding is more effective than in laboratory tests. However, this method should also be tested in the field trial operation.
