Objective To investigate and understand the status of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in the population of unpaid blood donors in Rizhao City. Methods A total of 46 720 unpaid blood donors on the streets of Rizhao City from 2005 to 2009 were detected by ELISA and the anti-HCV was detected by ELISA. Results A total of 85 anti-HCV positive were detected, the average positive rate was 0.18%. The positive rate of anti-HCV each year was 0.23%, 0.20%, 0.20%, 0.15% and 0.14% respectively. There was no significant difference in the positive detection rate of anti-HCV among different sex unpaid blood donors (P> 0.05). Conclusion The HCV infection rate in unpaid blood donors tends to decrease year by year. Testing unpaid blood donors is an important way to screen out anti-HCV positive.
