The authors selected 20 patients with cytomegalovirus-negative allogeneic bone marrow transplantation and 10 healthy controls to prospectively evaluate the level of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) DNA in their peripheral blood mononuclear cells . The amount of HHV-6 in blood and saliva samples after bone marrow transplantation was measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction once a week for 3 months.
