理学宗旨意在维持心性之学与明体达用之间的价值平衡,突出"内圣"同时致力于"外王"。两宋士大夫入仕为官而期盼得君行道,得益于宋代重文轻武与君臣共治天下的政治策略,同时宋代科举制的完善为士人实现圣贤理想提供历史机遇。理学的价值宗旨与历史衍化并非总是一致,无论是从理论本身的发生规律还是知识传播过程的条件限制来看,理论皆不可避免会衍化为与本身初衷相对立的异己状态。随着朝代更迭,有国者论证政权正统性的政治所需,以及控制人心思想以行统治之便,当理学被置于官方正统地位,成为统治阶
