如果从人物塑造的角度或者说是从性格观念发展史的角度,去纵向考察中外两千多年的戏剧创作史的话,那么,我们可以发现,从古至今的剧作家们在性格观念上的历史进化过程可以分为三个大的阶段;而如果从横向去考察的话,那么,这三大发展阶段实际上又可以被认为是三大流派,它们的资历和影响各有深浅大小之分,但三者鼎足而立,各以自己的强大实力(亦即各自拥有的代表作家与成功作品)雄据于当今世界剧坛之上。第一个大的历史阶段或流派是“将人物情节化”。这一流派在戏剧史上出现最早,从古希腊的悲剧喜剧经由中世纪直到文艺复兴时期莎士比亚之前的戏剧,从我国宋元时代的南戏与杂剧、明清传奇
