The European Single Market was formally established in January 1993 with the goal of allowing 370 million people in 15 countries of the 15 countries to freely travel within the Union and to freely choose places for doing business, investing, housing, working or retirement, and eventually form a huge single market. Today, after a decade of hard work, the results have been remarkable, not only creating 2.5 million jobs, but also netting 87.7 billion euros in wealth. However, in addition to these positive news, the European single market is also facing a series of serious challenges: to digest the consequences of the EU’s eastward expansion, to boost the sluggish economy in the euro area and to increase the integration of Europe.
