南海西部海域蕴藏着丰富的天然气资源,具有良好的勘探开发前景。对外合作以来,通过勘探已有了重大发现,与美国阿科公司合作勘探开发的崖13—1气田,地质储量在1 000亿m~3以上,明年(1996年)1月1日将正式向香港和海南省供气。为进一步加速建设南海西部大气区。使其成为我国南方沿海经济发展的重要能源,中国海洋石油总公司1988年提出了建设南海西部大气区的发展战略,并制定了“油气并举,向气倾斜”的勘探方针。经过多年的努力。目前南海西部大气区的勘探已取得了突破性的进展,形成了临高、东方、乐东、崖城、文昌五大主攻区.主要成果有: (1)探明东方1—1、乐东15—1两个气田。东方1—1气田预计地质储量为600～700亿m~3。乐东15—1气田地质储量约为200亿m~3。
