Heart failure (HF) has become a major public health concern for public health. According to data released by the American Heart Association (AHA), there are about 5 million HF patients in the United States and 550,000 new cases of HF each year. In 2006, direct and indirect U.S. expenditures on HF were as high as 29.6 billion U.S. dollars, while in 2010 this figure is expected to climb to 39.2 billion U.S. dollars. According to the National Discharge Record survey, the number of discharged HF patients was 399,000 in 1979, compared with 1,087,000 and 1,106,000 in 1996 and 2006, respectively.
