说起孙菊仙,首先会想起他拥有的三个称谓。一曰:“后三鼎甲”,二曰:“孙处”,三曰:“老乡亲”。所谓“鼎甲”,是科举时代称呼状元、榜眼、探花的三个代词。京剧观众借以称呼他们心目中的优秀演员,如“老三鼎甲”余三胜、程长庚、张二奎,以及其后与孙菊仙鼎足而三的谭鑫培和汪桂芬,可谓殊荣。关于“孙处”,有人视作孙的名字是不对的,昔日票友登台,皆用处字,前冠以姓,如孙处(孙菊仙)德处、(德珺如)等。至于“老乡亲”则是孙菊仙家乡(天津)观众对他的亲切称呼。以上三个称谓简明地道出了孙菊仙的成就、出身以及观众对他的厚爱。
