当代,各国武装力量构成情况各异,总的来说,主要有四种大的类型:一种是采取常备军、后备部队、群众武装和武装警察相结合的,主要有中国、越南、古巴等;第二种是采取常备军、后备部队和武装警察相结合的,主要有欧洲、北美的多数国家,以及亚洲的部分国家;第三种是采取常备军与武装警察相结合的,主要有非洲、拉丁美洲的多数国家以及亚洲的部分国家;第四种是少数较小的国家和地区实行单一的武装组织形式,有的建有少量军队。一些具有典型意义的国家武装力量构成如下:
